Privacy Policy — Landmark Lens

This Privacy Policy describes how Landmark Lens ("we," "us," "the app") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application.

By using Landmark Lens, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

Information We Collect

Information You Provide

Account information. When you sign in, we collect basic account identifiers — an email address and a unique user ID — through Firebase Authentication. We do not collect your name, photo, or other profile details unless you choose to add them.

Saved landmarks. When you save a landmark, we store a record linking your user ID to the landmark identifier and the time you saved it. This is used to populate your "Saved" tab.

Information Collected Automatically

Location data. With your permission, we use your device's location to show you nearby landmarks. Your precise location is used in-session to query nearby places and is not stored on our servers as a coordinate history. You can deny location access in your device settings, but the app's core discovery feature will be limited.

Usage analytics. We log app interactions — views, saves, shares, directions requests, and detail page opens — along with the associated landmark's category. This data powers the personalization algorithm that decides what to show you next. Each event records: your user ID, the landmark ID, the event type, the landmark's category, and a timestamp.

Device information. We collect basic device identifiers required for push notifications (an Expo push token) and to maintain your session.

Information We Do Not Collect

We do not collect contacts, photos, microphone audio, your camera roll, your browsing history outside the app, biometric data, financial information, or content from other apps.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Show you landmarks near your current location

  • Personalize the order and selection of landmarks shown in your feed

  • Maintain your saved landmarks list across devices

  • Send you push notifications you have opted into

  • Diagnose technical issues and improve the app

  • Comply with legal obligations

How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information.

We share information with the following service providers, who process it on our behalf:

  • Firebase (Google) — authentication, landmark database, analytics event storage

  • Neon (PostgreSQL hosting) — storage of your saved-landmark records

  • Render — backend application hosting

  • Expo — push notification delivery

These providers are bound by their own privacy policies and contractual obligations to handle data only as instructed.

We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.

Data Retention

We retain your account data and saved landmarks for as long as your account is active. Analytics events are retained for up to 24 months for the purposes of improving personalization, after which they are anonymized or deleted.

You can request deletion of your account and associated data at any time by emailing the address at the bottom of this policy. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.

Your Choices and Rights

Location. You can revoke location permission at any time in your device's Settings → Privacy → Location Services.

Push notifications. You can disable notifications at any time in your device settings.

Account deletion. You can request full account deletion by emailing us. Deletion removes your account, saved landmarks, and analytics events.

Access and correction. You can request a copy of the personal information we hold about you or correction of any inaccuracies by emailing us.

If you are a resident of California, the European Union, the United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions with comprehensive privacy laws, you may have additional rights, including the right to portability and the right to object to certain processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.

Children's Privacy

Landmark Lens is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (HTTPS) and encryption at rest for our databases. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top. For material changes, we will provide additional notice through the app or by email.
